Integrated communications and branding strategy

To achieve massive behavior change, sometimes you just need a little positive reinforcement. Los Angeles was entering its fifth year of historical drought, but because our climate is typically warm and dry anyway, many Angelenos tuned out the severity of this drought. So when Mayor Eric Garcetti signed an executive directive that asked residents to reduce water use by 20%, we partnered with the Mayor’s Fund for LA to launch an aggressive citywide campaign to build awareness and drastically change the City’s behavior around water consumption.

LOS ANGELES — Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced a 20 percent reduction in the city’s per capita water use, meeting an ambitious goal he set less than three years ago in response to California’s punishing drought.
The announcement came at an event honoring “Drop Defenders,” Angelenos who have taken extraordinary steps to cut their own water use and encourage others to take aggressive steps to conserve.
“I challenged Los Angeles to take the lead in conservation because clean, fresh water is a natural resource like no other — scarce, but available at the turn of a tap and easily wasted if we aren’t mindful of how we use it,” said Mayor Garcetti. “I am proud of Angelenos for achieving this historic reduction in our water use, and I am especially proud of our Drop Defenders for showing all of us how to make every drop count.”
Mayor Garcetti issued Executive Directive No. 5 in October 2014, challenging Angelenos to cut their water use by 20 percent. Residents now use an average of 104 gallons per person per day, down from 131 gallons per person per day in 2014.
The 20 percent reduction also meets the 2017 goal of the Sustainable City pLAn. The next water conservation goal in the pLAn: a 22.5 percent reduction by 2025, one part of a long-term strategy to reduce dependence on uncertain water supplies.
